West Gate Bridge Victims Remembered
Information: A brief article about Mark Seymour's song Westgate. Author: Rick Edwards, Hobsons Bay Leader. Date: 21 October 2010. Original URL: http://hobsons-bay-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/west-gate-bridge-victims-remembered/
In his song Westgate, Mark Seymour tells the story of Eddy Halsall - one of the lucky workers who survived the collapse of the West Gate Bridge 40 years ago.
Bolts started snapping on the western span Eddy’s story and main others like it were recounted last Friday at the anniversary of the 1970 disaster which killed 35 workers. Wild weather failed to keep those who lost loved ones - and the bridge survivors - from attending the memorial in Hyde St, Spotswood. Following a minute’s silence and wreath laying at the memorial plaque under the bridge, the official commemoration was held across the road at the Pumping Station at Scienceworks. Seymour sang Westgate and some of his other tunes at Scienceworks.
