***1/2 Jack Howard was part of the Hunters and Collectors horn section, but with this album he’s shown he’s also a fine singer-songwriter. There’s plenty here for Hunters fans to savour, and The Long Lost Brothers, including former Sports member Ed Bates on pedal steel, add an exquisite rootsy edge. The album also includes a bonus six-track EP, Don’t Fade Away, that Jack recorded with guitarist John Berto. Overall, there’s nothing particularly fashionable about this record, but it’s passionate bluesy pop and fine storytelling. An understated gem.
