“What can you hear in my voice?” Jack Howard asks in the opening cut of his new album. He has a voice like Don Walker – a storyteller’s voice. Howard, best known for his work in Hunters and Collectors, is also a fine songwriter – check out If I Were A Bird, which simply soars, aided by the stellar playing of Jo Schornikow on piano, Kieran Jones on double bass, and Jeremy Hopkins on drums. Recorded at a high school and in Howard’s bungalow, I don’t think this album had a big budget. But it’s world class.
