Labor Announces Funding Boosts in Arts Policy

Peter Garrett says Labor will prioritise funding for arts projects in regional areas. The Federal Opposition has promised extra funding for the Australia Council as part of its arts policy in the lead up to the federal election. Actor David Wenham and musicians Tim Freedman and Mark Seymour have joined other members of Australia's arts community for the Federal Opposition's official arts policy launch at Parramatta in western Sydney. Labor's arts spokesman, Peter Garrett, has promised an extra $10 million over four years for the Australia Council. He says Labor will also spend $17 million to set up news arts innovation centres. "Centres which marry up artists, entrepreneurs, universities, businesses and governments," he said. Labor has also promised to spend $7.6 million on projects that support Indigenous artists. Mr Garrett says funding for arts projects in regional areas will be a priority. "One of the things we need to have in Australia, given the huge appetite and enthusiasm Australians do have for the artistic endeavour, is the opportunity for programming in the towns away from the major city centres but which are nevertheless places of considerable creativity and appetite for that work," he said.
