Rarities Survey

The Task

A lot of Hunters and Collectors material has been released as 'b-sides' on singles and on limited edition releases over the years which can not be easily found. However, the potential does exist for some of this material to be officially released somewhere down the track. Whereas there are many options open, most likely is the inclusion of a bonus disc on a future 'best of' release. What we - and Hunters and Collectors - would like to know is what you, the fan, would like to see on such a release.

Fan View Summary

Basically, b-sides tend to preferred to remixes and rarer live material. Overall, though, fans want as much as is willing to be released.

After conducting the rarities survey, there is a way to have everyone happy:

Release a separate rarities collection (like Crowded House on "Afterglow") that includes every distinct studio B-side. It should make one nice (extremely varied!) compact disc.

Include a bonus disc of remixes, rare live recordings and anything else with the Best Of.

If this is not an option:

Include a full studio b-sides disc as a bonus with the Best Of.

Preferred b-sides depend on the person.

Comments?: I am by far more interested in a b-sides collection than anything else. U2 kind of annoyed me by putting so many remixes on their bonus disc for the Best Of 1990-2000.

Best Of Survey

The Task

At some point in the future it is highly likely that there will be 'Best Of' Hunters and Collectors album released. This survey allows you to have your say on the contents of this best of album. If you are a fan and would like to see Hunters and Collectors 'well represented' by a best of album... then why not have your say! Note: Assume a one CD 'Best Of' - a maximum of 20 songs (80 minutes). Remember, these types of albums are often the introduction a person gets to an artist.

Fan View Summary

There is a lot of debate re: a Best Of. The typical observed behaviour of online fans is that they all have their own ideas and inevitably whinge when the Best Of is released (the latest example I remember was U2 fans and the Best Of 1990-2000). Topics of debate include:

# Contents #

As for the contents, the following songs are more or less compulsory (the 'hits'):

1. Talking To A Stranger
2. The Slab
3. Say Goodbye
4. Throw Your Arms Around Me 1986/1990 (opinion is divided around 50-50)
5. Do You See What I See?
6. When The River Runs Dry
7. Blind Eye
8. Where Do You Go?
9. Holy Grail
10. True Tears Of Joy

Beyond these songs, the following are popular with most fans:

11. Still Hanging 'Round (highly recommended)
12. Judas Sheep
13. Carry Me
14. What's A Few Men?
15. Back On The Breadline
16. The Way You Live
17. Under The Sun
18. We The People
19. Imaginary Girl
20. Back In The Hole
21. Suit Your Style

That is slightly more material than will fit on a standard CD. Hunters and Collectors appreciation is a personal thing - fan 'best of' listings would be as varied as you would get from the eight members.

# A 1 or 2 CD best of release #

Fans never think one CD is enough - but the fans are not really the target audience anyway, since they already own all of the releases! In my opinion, H&C were a top albums band and a one CD 'best of' can provide a great introduction while still leaving enough undiscovered material to motivate new fans to explore further.

For 1 CD Best Of:

Cheaper.
Better as an 'introduction'.
Will not detract sales from standard albums as much.
Bonus CD easier incorporated.

For 2 CD Best Of:

More comprehensive.
Better representation of H&C.
Too much early H&C may scare 'newbies'.

# Collected Works Part 2? #

Since there is already a Collected Works, the idea was presented for simply adding a Collected Works Part 2. The problem with this idea is that there are only three albums after the initial Collected Works...

Comments: I think a "best of" release should be more than just singles. Hunnas have a lot of great songs that deserve to be on it. I also think they deserve more than one cd in the 'best of'. After 18 years, i think they could do a double album... but those don't sell as well, do they?

Comments: "Collected Works" was fairly definitive of H&C up until 1990, no need to re-hash material. I guess labelling it "Collected Works 2" would be appropriate. I think a band with the lifespan of H&C deserves the right to compile 2 best-of's like U2 have

DVD Survey

The Task

A lot of fans that come across True Believers (and us too, of course) eagerly anticipate Hunters and Collectors on DVD. Standard releases are always likely (eg. Under One Roof on DVD) but we are more interested in what you would like to see on a 'best of' like video collection. This DVD survey is your chance to have a say on the contents of a 'best of' Hunna's DVD.

Fan View Summary

The ideal would be:

The Way To Go Out on DVD.
Under One Roof on DVD.
A Collected Video Anthology on DVD.

The collected video anthology concept is a comprehensive collection of all studio Hunters and Collectors video clips. There are almost two hours worth of them. Both versions of Throw Your Arms Around Me should be on it. If they are up to your standards, it would be great if the studio "Sway" and "Carry Me" clips (unofficially done by an 'enterprising video editor' in the 80's) were included. Including Sway and Carry Me, there are 25 studio video clips. This anthology would probably make a Collected Works DVD redundant (although, of course, some would like to see this).

Anthony Horan, a fan knowledgeable in DVD technology, advises that using a double layer DVD it would be possible to put all video clips, The Way To Go Out and Under One Roof on one DVD without a loss in quality. This is an interesting idea (but I assume the final decision will be based here on costs/benefits). Midnight Oil do something similar to this on their "20,000 Watt RSL" DVD. Anthony also suggests not to 'fake' 5.1 surround sound audio - either just use the stereo or remaster.

Any interviews, live material or other stuff sitting around would be good for the DVD's. Reviewers are real suckers for that sort of thing =)

I believe that not only were H&C a great Live experience, as shown in "Under One Roof" especially, where they were perhaps at their most refined, but their promotional clips did a lot to convey what each song was about. "Everything's on Fire" is a brilliant example of this, "We The People" in a crowded room, "The Way You Live".... I could go on for hours...

Given the amount and quality of the H&C stuff, it can't be put onto just one disc, there needs to be a series of them.
The sooner the better too!

Comments?: There's enough room on a dual-layered DVD for the lot, so the lot would be great - as long as you use an authoring company that knows how to get lots of video onto a disc without losing quality. Oh, and please, no "fake 5.1 surround" audio gimmickry. Remastered stereo is just fine, unless of course someone feels like doing full 5.1 surround remixes from the multitracks :)
