Liner Notes

In the beginning it was all about "intimate evenings with," or "raw and acoustic", or Mark Seymour in "Intimate mode... solo and unplugged".. Well the hard truth is that though it was sometimes intimate never at any stage was it "unplugged." The guitar has always been "plugged-in" to something otherwise you wouldn't hear it, especially solo to a room full of Crows fans eating dessert and yelling at each other.

Yes, it has to be said, the acoustic thing has grown in volume and "intimacy" has taken on many forms: small, middling to large, sometimes cacophonous. After all, the rules of the game haven't changed. If you've paid good money to hear something you may as well be able to. I should explain that the acoustic guitar I play has a pick-up in it which means that, with sympathetic engineering it can get bloody loud when required. And sometimes loud is REQUIRED.

Someone recently asked me for the umpteenth time...

"What kind of gigs do you prefer Mark?"

"I'm sorry?"

"Well, now that you're solo... now that you don't have the band behind you?"

"Well, actually, I do on the odd occasion have a band behind me and not very far behind either. A few feet in fact. Sometimes the stages are so small the drummer practically has his head up my arse but let's not go there."

"But how do you feel about that, not having the band?"

"Hmm," I thought, "This isn't going well."

"Look, let's cut to the chase," I said. "I don't mind how it looks nor how many people are on stage, as long as it doesn't exceed forty like it did in the old days but since you're asking I'll say this. I'm happy as long as it sounds good and you can understand what I'm singing about, accompanied or otherwise.. But that said, no matter how intimate it sometimes can get, I still refuse to play in my pyjamas, though I have been asked to."
